Overall, this recording is not unlike its second track - "Nice and Easy." I don't think I've ever heard Ranee sounding more relaxed or as inventive as she does on this fine recording. There is no shortage of variety here, indeed there is something for everyone, and although most of the tunes are old favourites, the arrangements of Rick Formosa lend them a fresh approach. The balance is lovely - at no time did I feel the band was overpowering or out of context with Ranee's lyrical voice.Having some of the world's best musicians on hand doesn't hurt either. Helping Ranee to achieve her musical goals are Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen, my favourite rhythm section. Both of these guys have some wonderful moments ' here, keeping everything in place for some outstanding flugelhorn solos by the always exciting Guido Basso, whose interplay with saxophonist Pat LaBarbera (who plays the way a tenor should sound) is a marvel. At times these two sound more like five or six! I do believe Canadian pianist Tilden Webb comes into his own on this recording, and he displays an unusual maturity for such a young player. Guitarist Richard Ring is someone I've always admired, and he is one of the most complete musicians I've had the pleasure of knowing. He shines throughout, at turns tender and sensitive or swinging hard, depending on what's called for. Ranee's singing is quite diverse from track to track, and she handles it all with seeming effortlessness. It sounds like she had a good time recording this. I certainly enjoyed listening!
