Liner Notes

“The Musicals – Jazz On Broadway” is a union of two mighty cultural art forms, jazz music and the music of the Broadway theatre.

The songs on this recording were chosen not only for their acknowledged greatness, but also for how easily they lent themselves to jazz arrangements. We were careful not to disturb the richness and perfection each writer originally intended.

It is my hope that through my love for the music in both these areas, the thread that weaves the fabric of the creative life of Ranee Lee will also deeply touch the listener, uniting the heart and soul of these two musical audiences.

It is important to recognize that this collaboration of love could not have evolved so positively without the special talents of each musician, each arranger, and all those connected with its creation. And of course grateful appreciation for the genius and musical contributions of Red Mitchell.

I believe this recording has something for every listener, from the very young to the young at heart. As a matter of fact, the children to whom I speak in the song “Distant Melody” represent not only the children in my family, but yours too!

Enjoy,

Ranee Lee
