It adds a bonus cut, Ornette Coleman's, "Blues Connotation" which the composer had recorded July 19, 1960.This was Ballantyne's first session for Justin Tune and as he had done some playing with Henderson while attending North Texas State, Joe was an easy choice when Jon was asked who he'd like as a guest. Joe had in fact lived in Montreal in 1959 when he did quite a bit of playing with guitarist René Thomas. He was impressive even back then. Jon was later to play Japan as a member of Henderson's group and they did a decidedly different duo concert at the 1989 Montreal International Jazz Festival. Jon had come East from Saskatoon and in 1986 was an easy winner in the jazz Festival's "Concours." He presently lives in New York where his latest Justin Time CD "The Loose" was recorded. The marvelous rhythm team, of bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Jerry Fuller came in from Toronto for the session. Other than two standards and the Coleman composition, the music was composed by Ballantyne. His "Monkish" piece, "BYO Blues" has been a longtime favourite of mine - see if you can spot Henderson's quote from Stravinsky's "Petrouchka" on this cut. I've always felt privileged to have been able to attend this memorable meeting of Jon and Joe. Len Dobbin Correspondent "Jazz Report" Contributor (Montreal) "Mirror" Editorial consultant Jazz Vine |
