Liner Notes

Stand-up guitarist; saxophone fluency; an identifiable sound - raw, almost metallic: these describe the truly unique Canadian guitarist Sonny Greenwich.

Greenwich has taken the influence of John Coltrane and directed it to the guitar. His original sound, coupled with his ability to take a tune to the brink of structured discordance and follow it up with a beautifully melodic ballad make any Sonny Greenwich performance an exciting event.

Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, he now makes his home near Montreal. During his brief residency in the U.S. in the late 60's, jazz fans were treated to his attractive blend of styles when he toured with alto-saxophonist John Handy. Greenwich soon tired of the grind and returned to Canada, where he's led an almost reclusive existence - seldom giving public performances and recording infrequently. His aversion to the spotlight only enhances his "underground" reputation.

This recording represents a milestone in his career. Backed by his regular working group - all musicians from Montreal - his raw sound has finally been captured on record.

Be on the lookout for Sonny Greenwich to finally emerge from the underground!
