Following his highly acclaimed 2001 album Vietnam - The Aftermath, this sequel recording continues war veteran and jazz composer Billy Bang’s healing process in the best manner a musician can - by transforming experiences of war and the nightmares they spawned into the refined substance of exquisite beauty and profound musical artistry. While the previous album served as a catharsis for Bang, revisiting the emotional turmoil and chaotic terror of his wartime experiences, the aptly-titled Vietnam: Reflections offers a portrait of the changes that have occurred over the past 30 years in both Vietnam and America. Blending the objective overview of a mature artist with the passionate subjectivity of his own experiences, Billy has created a precious gem that offers deeper insights with each listening.

An outstanding ensemble of musicians includes four other Vietnam veterans and, intriguingly, two Vietnamese-born musicians. The vets include trumpeter Ted Daniel, drummer Michael Carvin, percussionist Ron Brown and conductor Butch Morris, as well as pianist John Hicks and bassist Curtis Lundy. Nhan Thanh Ngo’s stylings on dan tranh (a traditional finger-plucked dulcimer) and the haunting voice of Co Boi Nguyen perfectly blend into the music on four tracks, producing an authenticity and cohesion to the seamless synthesis of Vietnamese and Jazz musical traditions. Acclaimed reedmen Henry Threadgill and James Spaulding also guest on one and three tracks respectively.

Cet album est la suite de l'album intitulé Vietnam-The aftermath lancé en 2001 et acclamé par la critique. Vietnam : Reflections est la progression du processus de guérison qui s'épanouit à travers la musique de Billy Bang, vétéran de la guerre du Vietnam et compositeur jazz. Seul le musicien possède le secret pour permettre la transformation des expériences de guerre et des cauchemars en une beauté rare et en une profondeur musicale artistique. Alors que l'album précédent servait de catharsis pour Bang, explorant la tourmente et la terreur chaotique de ces expérience durant la guerre, Vietnam : Reflections- titre d'ailleurs pertinent- illustre un portrait des changements perçus depuis 30 ans au Vietnam et en Amérique. Grâce aux analyses objectives de l'artiste et à la passion suggestives de ses expériences passées, Bang offre un petit bijou qui permet une nouvelle prise de conscience à chaque écoute. Les musiciens, présents sur l'album, sont impressionnants et incluent quatre vétérans de la guerre du Vietnam, ainsi que deux vietnamiens. Parmi les musiciens vétérans il y a le trompettiste Ted Daniel, Michael Carvin à la batterie, le percussionniste Ron Brown, le pianiste John Hicks, le contrebassiste Curtis Lundy et le chef d'orchestre Butch Morris. Nhan Thanh Ngo joue du dan tranh (dulcimer vietnamien traditionnel à cordes pincées) et Co Boi Nguyen dont la voix lancinante se fond très bien sur la musique enregistrée sur 4 pistes, produisant une cohésion, une authenticité de la synthèse du jazz américain et de la musique traditionnelle vietnamienne. Les célèbres musiciens Henry Threadgill et James Spaulding sont les artistes invités sur les pistes 1 et 3.
