One of Canada’s jazz greats, three-time Juno winner P.J. Perry and his alto saxophone have worked smoky clubs and concert venues throughout Europe and North America for more than forty years. Through his career, P.J. has shared the stage with countless jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Michel LeGrand, Pepper Adams, Kenny Wheeler, Tom Harrell, and The Boss Brass among others. He has performed with almost every Canadian Symphony orchestra, most recently, with his own show titled "The Joy of Sax". Bobby Shew is recognized as a fiery bebop trumpet innovator and strong soloist and session artist who for over four decades has performed and recorded with the best of the jazz world. Particularly respected for his big-band work, Shew has become one of the jazz community's most in-demand clinicians and concert soloists. Border Crossing (recorded live at the Cellar, Vancouver) features a wonderful alliance between the two bop musicians and the rest of the band: pianist Ross Taggard, Neil Swainson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums, as well as bassist Andre LaChance and drummer Dave Robbins. Perry has assembled two excellent rhythm sections for the two performances (summer 2003 & 2004) that were the source for this recording. The selection of great tunes by such masters as Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, Bud Powell, Gigi Gryce and Blue Mitchell, and the performances they received are true to the spirit of bop, but free of its clichés.

C’est l’un des grands jazzmen du Canada. Trois fois récipiendaire du prix JUNO, PJ Perry et son saxophone alto ont tourné dans les clubs enfumés et les salles de spectacles à travers l’Amérique du Nord et l’Europe depuis quarante ans. Depuis le début de sa carrière, PJ a partagé la scène avec les plus célèbres noms du Jazz tels que Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Michel LeGrand, Pepper Adams, Kenny Wheeler, Tom Harrell, et The Boss Brass, pour ne nommer que ceux-là. Il a donné des performances avec tous les orchestres Symphoniques du Canada et récemment produisait son propre spectacle intitulé « The Joy of Sax ». Bobby Shew est reconnu comme étant l’un des plus enflammés des trompettistes bebop. Depuis quatre décennies, il reste un soliste à grande puissance et un artiste de studio qui a interprété et enregistré avec les meilleurs noms du jazz. Respecté particulièrement pour son œuvre écrit pour les big-band, Shew est devenu l’un des cliniciens, conférenciers et solistes les plus en demande de la communauté jazz.
Border Crossing enregistré en direct au Cellar à Vancouver emmène une belle complicité entre les deux musiciens bebop et le groupe : Le pianiste Ross Taggard, Neil Swainson à la contrebasse et Joe LaBarbera à la batterie. Le bassiste André LaChance et le batteur Dave Robbins y sont aussi présents sur l’album. Perry a réussi à rassembler deux excellentes sections rythmiques pour les deux spectacles (été 2003 et été 2004) qui ont été l’inspiration de cet album. Une sélection formidable de pièces musicales de Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, Bud Powell, Gigi Gryce et Blue Mitchell s’y retrouvent. Perry et ses musiciens leur font un honneur en les interprétant dans le respect de l’esprit du bop mais aussi avec une nouvelle fraîcheur enlevant ainsi tout cliché qui s’y rapporte habituellement.
