Album Details

This explosive release, the latest cross-cultural exploration from David Murray, and unquestionably one of his finest, reunites him with the legendary Pharoah Sanders, with whom he last collaborated on the Grammy Award-winning recording Blues For Coltrane in 1987* - a record that also featured jazz heavyweights McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes and Cecil McBee. While that recording was, as its title promises, a tribute to the late saxophone legend, this one couldn't be more different. Gwotet is, from the moment the "needle" hits the record, a big party: propulsive percussion, driving bass (acoustic and electric) and a masterful, mostly Cuban horn section (three trumpets, alto sax, trombone and baritone sax, in addition to Murray and Sanders!) are fused with Gwo-Ka singer / percussionists (Guadeloupean gwo-ka drums are hand instruments that date back to slave days) to make for a record that will move your spirit and your body.

* The Grammy was for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance at the 31st Annual Grammy Awards in 1988.
