This was Mal Waldron’s last known recording, completed in two days in October, 2001, the year before his death. Waldron’s work was chiefly in the hard bop, post-bop and free jazz, and he was known for his distinctive voicings and adaptable style (inspired by Monk). He’s also closely associated in history with Billie Holiday.

David Murray’s oeuvre is impressive both from a “cutting edge” standpoint as well as for its regard for the past. After recording with Elvin Jones, Cedar Walton & Pharoah Sanders, this new recording – a blend of originals and standards – is another great Murray collaboration with a jazz elder. It’s also very unforced, as Waldron too had one foot in the past and the other in the avant garde.

Silence est le dernier enregistrement de Mal Waldron réalisé en octobre 2001, un an avant sa mort. L’œuvre de Waldron a surtout évolué dans le style « hard bop , post bop et free jazz, » et il a été connu pour ses ‘chord voicings’ distinctifs nettement inspirés par Thélonious Monk..Dans l'histoire du jazz, son nom est également associé a celui de Billie Holiday,avec laquelle il a travaillé.

L'oeuvre de David Murray est impressionnante autant du point de vue "avant-garde" que pour son respect pour le passé. Après des enregistrements auprès d’Elvin Jones, Cedar Walton et Pharoah Sanders, ce nouvel enregistrement - un mélange de compositions originales et de standards - est une fois de plus une rencontre au sommet avec un doyen du jazz.
