In jazz improvisation there is a time when you cease to play notes from a page, or to think about what you are playing... it just comes from the heart. From my years of playing with Buddy Rich, and later with Elvin Jones, I've learned that it's imperative to play from the heart, honestly and with no compromises. It is an attitude that I take with me into every performance and I feel I owe to you, the listener. The production of this type of jazz project requires the support and cooperation of many people. As when I recorded Virgo Dance in 1987, Justin Time producer Jim West allowed me the artistic freedom to choose the personnel and music, provided us with excellent recording staff, and flew in Ian Terry from Santa Fe to mix and master the recording. Sybil Walker, manager of Top 0'The Senator, gave me the opportunity to assemble George Cables (piano), Rufus Reid (bass), and Joe LaBarbera (drums) to play with me for one week at the Toronto jazz club. Playing in the club the same week as the session allowed us to explore some of our musical ideas and feel relaxed before we recorded. I've long admired George Cables. When I toured with Elvin in the 70s, we often played George's classic Think On Me, and I used go to the Vanguard in New York to hear him perform with Joe Henderson. George's solos are so lyrically rich; he took ordinary lead sheets and reshaped them into musical gems. Rufus Reid and I have played together for years at Jamey Aebersold's summer jazz programs. In particular, I remember great concerts that included Hal Galper, Randy Brecker and Woody Shaw. Because George and Rufus had played together in the Dexter Gordon Quartet, they set the foundation for Joe and me. I am always comfortable in the studio with my brother Joe. We lave played together since the early 50s in every kind of setting and have an instinctive musical rapport. Joe has played with many of the world's great artists, but his work with the Bill Evans Trio is especially notable. Two of Joe's compositions are featured on this CD. I hope you have as much enjoyment listening to this music as we had recording it. Pat LaBarbera SONGS 1. Dream Steps - Following in the tradition of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, I enjoy writing compositions based on established standards. This melody is based on a rhythmic displacement over the changes of You Stepped Out of a Dream. 2. From The Heart - The title tune of this CD, Joe composed it based on the playing style of trumpeter Clay Jenkins. I chose to use the soprano saxophone to mimic the feel of the trumpet. 3. Another Day In The Sun - I took a motif that Jimmy Garrison used in his free bass solos with Coltrane and worked it into a melody based on the chord changes of the jazz classic Solar. Rufus leads this one off with an earthy solo. 4. Second Time Out - With luck, we get a chance to repeat pleasurable experiences. This year has brought me a second recording with Justin Time and a return to touring with Elvin Jones. It has a great solo from George and equally impressive 8's from Joe. 5. Kind Of Bill - Joe wrote this beautiful melody in tribute to Bill Evans. The style evokes strong memories of Bill that will stay with you long after you hear it. 6. Just Say Yes-...to life, to jazz, to performing. Just a fun blowing vehicle. It has an odd form,10-10-10-14, and a brilliant piano solo from George. 7. Fantazm - Inspired by Elvin Jones' recording with Charlie Mariano of a rarely heard Ellington composition, I love to play this in a club late in the evening when the mood is mellow and the audience is attentive. Rufus on Arco bass and Joe on mallets establish the mysterious eastern flavour of this tune. 8. A New Town Is A Blue Town - One of the songs from the Broadway musical The Pyjama Game, Stan Getz later recorded it with strings and with his quartet. It has a wistful air about it. 9. I Wished On The Moon - I reworked the changes to this Sinatra classic a few years ago and made it one of my club staples. Joe's drum solo on this is an excellent example of over the bar line phrasing. |
