Album Details

“P.J. Perry, who has logged time with Dizzy Gillespie, Michel Legrand, Red Rodney and both Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass and Tentet, is as melodically impressive as he is technically polished…” - Jack Bowers, THE JAZZ REPORT

One of Canada’s jazz greats, three-time Juno winner P.J. Perry and his alto saxophone have worked smoky clubs and concert venues throughout Europe and North America for more than forty years. P.J. has also performed with the Edmonton Symphony (P.J. Perry and The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Justin Time, 1999), the Calgary Philharmonic, the Alberta Pops Orchestra, the Hamilton Philharmonic, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, and both the Vancouver and Victoria Symphony Orchestras. The Jazz Report has honored him for seven consecutive years as the critics’ choice for Best Alto Saxophonist. This year, Mr. Perry received the ‘Saxophonist of the Year’ award at the National Jazz Awards.

Worth Waiting For was recorded thirteen years ago, yet its timeless selections and superb interpretations place this album among the new century’s jazz treasures; its latest incarnation has been newly remastered and features previously unreleased tracks. P.J’s unceasingly melodic alto and deep velvety tenor are meant to ‘elevate the song, not the performer’ (Stan Dunn, KJAZ).

For this recording, P.J. chose a great team of musicians. He adds, “When I think back, I remember how comfortable and tasty the rhythm section was to play with. A few hours in the morning, a few in the afternoon and ‘voilà’ - the warmth and spirit of the music was achieved. I had heard Kenny [Barron] play “Star Crossed Lovers” at the club and I’m glad to say I was able to talk him into playing it here as a solo. Beautiful!”
