Album Details

This previously unreleased recording was culled from over four hours of material from Dizzy Gillespie’s 1981 engagement at the legendary Montreal nightspot, The Rising Sun. Gillespie is heard with guitarist Ed Cherry, electric bassist Michael Howell, drummer Tommy Campbell and Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr on flute and tenor. As with other recent re-issues and rarities in the mid-price Collector’s Classics series, this recording has been meticulously remastered and de-noised, contains informative liner notes (in this case, by jazz historian Len Dobbin), and is issued in the attractive digipak format. In all, it’s a worthy addition to Dizzy Gillespie’s oeuvre, and has been officially sanctioned for release by the late legendary trumpeter’s estate. The recording, a good example of Dizzy’s best work at the beginning of the 1980s, also serves to remind us of the importance of Doudou Boicel’s nightspot on Montreal’s Ste. Catherine Street, where you could regularly hear such renowned guests as Big Mama Thornton, Willy Girard, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim Hall, Bill Evans, Sonny Stitt and Archie Shepp. Thankfully some of this Montreal history was captured on tape (see Just A Memory’s catalogue for more Rising Sun recordings).
Dizzy’s formidable career includes numerous, widely known recordings, and he remains one of the most influential jazz musicians of all the times. Here’s an opportunity to hear something previously unreleased that’s been lovingly prepared with dedication and a strong admiration for one of jazz’s genuine masters.
