Rémi Bolduc

Rémi Bolduc is one of the most active saxophone players on the Montreal scene. He started performing professionally at age nineteen and soon after collaborated with such eminent Montreal musicians as bandleader Vic Vogel, pianist Lorraine Desmarais, drummer Bernard Primeau and guitarist René Lussier.

In 1991, Rémi left Montreal to pursue his studies in New York with noted alto saxophonist Steve Coleman, a veteran musician and former Miles Davis band member. This experience deeply influenced young Bolduc, and was instrumental in his evolution as a musician, bandleader and composer.

Rémi plays with much intensity and fervor, perhaps belying his own quiet nature. His ability to surprise the listener with his phrasing derives from both deep knowledge of the technical aspect of playing as well as his gift for composition. Rémi Bolduc’s performances are as a result both memorable and imaginative.

Rémi Bolduc is also a noted a jazz educator. He teaches saxophone and composition at McGill and Concordia Universities, and is a regular Guest Professor at the Banff School Of Fine Arts’ Summer Jazz program.

His discography includes three recordings as a leader as well as guest spots on a dozen further recordings. In May 2000, he was awarded a grant to study with the American pianist Kenny Werner. This resulted in a recorded collaboration, Remi’s first recording for Justin Time Records, entitled Tchat. This fresh and spontaneous duo recording breaks down the barriers separating solo and accompanying instruments - their “tchat” showed two musicians engaged in a lively and imaginative musical conversation.
