John Abercrombie - Don Thompson

Perhaps the most skilled of the contemporary jazz guitarists who have embraced and utilized rock techniques and electronic devices in an improvisational framework. He's used phase shifters, volume pedals, guitar synthesizers and the electric mandolin on a regular basis. Abercrombie is cited for helping create the "ECM sound", a patchwork of acoustic and electric sounds made by combining jazz, European and Asian/Indian elements and influences. This eclectic talent does not prevent him from being able to swing, he can play in the distorted, jagged rock style, execute masterful be-bop changes, engage in 12-bar blues patterns and engage in free dialogues.

He began playing guitar at the age of 14, taking lessons from a local teacher and went on to attend the prestigious Berklee School of Music in the mid-60's while playing in rock bands. Abercrombie studied guitar with Jack Petersen and in 1967 - 1968 toured with Johnny "Hammond" Smith. He moved to New York in 1969 and worked briefly with the group Dreams, then played with Chico Hamilton. Abercrombie later played with Jeremy Steig, Gil Evans, Gato Barbieri and recorded with Dave Liebman.

Working with these musicians attracted extensive critical attention for him, which led him to his recording career. In the mid 70's, Abercrombie began recording with John DeJohnette and as a leader. Since then, he has recorded with many great musicians like; Jan Hammer; Dave Holland; Peter Erskine; Vince Mendoza; Peter Donald and many more
