Deep Rumba

“Deep Rumba, a truly explosive orchestra of percussions, vocals and strings, led by its volcanic composer Kip Hanrahan, gathers the best of innovative Latin music made in New York” Verona Jazz reviews, June 2000.

Deep Rumba is an all-star group spearheaded by bandleader Kip Hanrahan, who explores Afro-Cuban rhythms interlaced with lush, profoundly emotional vocalizing. The band’s members like Jerry Gonzalez, Milton Cardona, Robby Ameen, Abraham Rodriguez, Xiomara Laugart (to mention a few from its constellation of a dozen) enjoy giving up on their individualism, becoming just a wonderful ‘banda’ of ‘rumberos’, among the best in the world. Relying almost exclusively on drums and vocals, Deep Rumba delivers a highly energetic display of Latin rhythms pure and authentic to the point of sounding raw and naked. On the other hand, Deep Rumba creates beats so intense and layered, the effect is quasi symphonic. Deep Rumba leaves that impression of achieving so much with so little, which is a testament, both to the supreme skill of the performers and the brilliant arrangements of Hanrahan.

Latin rhythms have been an essential spice in pop music and in jazz since the turn of the century. The members of Deep Rumba are aware it springs from a source richer and more ancient than any other form that just exploited its catchy side. Under the direction of musical instigator Kip Hanrahan, these master musicians point the way to a universe of groove, passion and soul.
