![]() | Brian BarleyBrian Barley began playing the clarinet at age 11 and, inspired by Lee Konitz, took up the saxophone at 13. He played clarinet in the New York Orchestra from 1963 to 1965, and also with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Settling in Montreal in 1966, he turned exclusively to jazz and was a member of groups led by Pierre Leduc, Ron Proby, Herbie Spanier, Vic Vogel and others. Around 1968, he formed the adventurous trio Aquarius Rising (Barley, tenor and soprano saxophone and bass-clarinet; Claude Ranger, drums; Michel Donato, double bas replaced later by Daniel Lessard, bass guitar). They recorded an under the name The Brian Barley Trio in 1970 and performed in Montreal and Quebec City. Barley also appeared on recordings from Expo 67 by Leduc and Maynard Ferguson.
