Basso - Dave Turner Quintet

One of Toronto’s top studio musicians, Guido Basso is well known as a leader, television music director and recording artist. He is one of the charter members of the Boss Brass, a jazz band featuring such masters as P.J. Perry, Terry Clarke, Rob McConnel, Mel Tormé, Joe Williams, The Hi-Lo’s, Oscar Peterson and Phil Woods among others.

The Boss Brass rich discography is filled with Basso’s soaring flugelhorn and trumpet solos. A child prodigy of trumpet at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, he got his start playing in Montreal dance bands in his teens. Although his career stretches through almost four decades, Basso is not among the best-known Canadian jazz musicians abroad since he dedicated a great part of his creative energy to the Toronto studio scene – behind the closed doors.

Basso is equally comfortable playing in a big band or chatting in a duo. His flugelhorn has acted in many different roles; classic ‘Blue Note’ jazz, standards, bop, latin, swing, bossa nova (Getz/Jobim style tracks), to mention a few. His studio career added to his talent a rare ability of a ‘prima vista’ impersonator. By switching moods and styles in “a twinkling”, Basso is deemed a desirable match for a variety of settings.
